World Religions

World Religions and Art

This marks the fourth year of World Religions at Hammond.  The purpose of this course is to take an intellectual/philosophical approach to studying the religions of the world present and past.  No religion or a lack of religion will be favored over any other in the way it is discussed.  Instead, all students will examine the many questions that religions answer for their adherents, discuss the common threads, and learn to appreciate the diversity of belief that surrounds them at Hammond.  Students taking this course should expect to hear beliefs and ideas very different than their own, and be willing to share their own without fear of intolerance or bigotry from within the classroom.

Syllabus
The Syllabus for the 2004-05 World Religions class is now posted

Discussion Board
By posting to the discussion board, students will be able to communicate to all who sign up their questions from the class.  These questions can be about the content, or about how to study better for my tests.  Please do not abuse this system for those of us who wish to create a positive online experience for my classes.  The board is available through blackboard.com.  Information about logging in will be given out during class the first week.

Homework
This class requires your brain to work.  Your grade will be determined primarily by your writing and your participation in class.  The essay responses will be written, demonstrating your new knowledge and opinions on the topic covered (for example, How did the world begin according to at least three different religions?).  These essays will be peer assessed, as well as graded by me.  They will be completed once every two weeks, approximately.

The second format is a longer essay or anti-paper (movie, illustration, collage, skit, etc.) which will incorporate multiple questions that you determine to be related.

Homework assignments are written on the board, and will also be available in the blog.
