98-00 It’s Academic Teams

In 2000, the HHS It'sAc team finished a two year stint as a complete team.  Zack Richardson, Meg Tilley, and Joe Blasi graduated with four top four finishes at local tournaments.  Zack, Meg, and Steve Kaltenbaugh took the TV team to a quarterfinal finish in 1999, and a semifinal finish in 2000.  Unfortunately, Damocles was not looking out for us that day as Howard defeated us in a sudden-death overtime question on their way to winning the IA Superbowl a month later.  Other important contributions were made by Doug Tilley, Tim Blasi, John Lipka, Brian Cassella, Matt Kaufman, Missy Peltzman, Dan Haack, and others.

97-98 Baltimore It's Academic Champions

In 1997, the HHS It'sAc team (21-12, 4-1 TV) finished second out of all teams participating in the Virginia, D.C., and Maryland television programs.  In a tough 595-590 loss to D.C. private school Gonzaga, Hammond proved their academic prowess.  Over 50 supporters (students, faculty, administration, alumni, and family) came to cheer on the team, which ended its year the best any team from Hammond has ever done.  The Baltimore championship plaque, and the second place tri-city plaque and trophy are on display in Hammond's front office.

The Baltimore champions for this past year consisted of seniors David "The Destructor" Heine, Air Francis Filteau, and Matt Fireboy Green.  David is now studying computer science at Carnegie Mellon, while Francis and Matt are attending the University of Maryland.

The team is coached by Hammond teacher and Dr. Seuss tie wearing Mr. Jenkins.  He's looking forward to further establishing Hammond as a powerhouse team this year in the team's attempt to retain their Baltimore championship.

Other members of the It's Academic team joined the top three in several tournaments last year.  Their best finish was fifth in the Lineberry Tournament hosted by Montgomery Blair High School in Montgomery County, Maryland.
