The Social Studies Department has three specific goals in addition to Hammonds school wide objectives. These include: valuing government by consent of the governed; being sensitive to prejudice; empathizing and recognizing the dignity of Man; and, developing skills in history, geography, causation, economics, and group participation. The Social Studies department is actively involved in preparing for the county and state assessments of the Core Learning Goals in American Government, United States History and Modern World History. In addition, a variety of electives, including advanced placement courses are offered through the Social Studies Department.
