The Hammond World Language Honor Societies

2007. Current members of the French, German, Italian,
and Spanish Honor Societies, led by Kayla Kim, Rachel
Lanspa, Zachary Shiflett and Nicole Battisti, participated
in a moving candlelight ceremony in which they passed

the torch of knowledge and enthusiasm to the new members. Following the
ceremony, inductees signed the official register of their society and all enjoyed a
festive reception. Read the full story, including the name s of all of the inductees.
On November 30th, approximately twenty ESOL students
will participate in a county-wide field trip to Howard
Community College
. While visiting HCC, students will
learn about the application process as well as the
academic programs that HCC has to offer. In addition,
students from Hammond will have an opportunity to
meet other ESOL students from around the county. This promises to be a fun,
educational, and enjoyable trip!
On Wednesday November 14, 2007, 60 of Señora
Bonner’s Spanish 1, 2 and 3 students attended Justo
Lamas’s concert at Old Mill High School in Millersville,
MD.
Justo Lamas is a singer from Buenos Aires, Argentina
who has been performing concerts in Spanish at schools
throughout the United States, promoting Hispanic
culture and helping teachers motivate their students to learn the language through
his music. Students sang and danced along during some of his songs. Spanish 2
students, Natalie Cheeks, was chosen to dance on stage along with students from
other schools. They had to shake to the “izquierda” (left) and shake to the “derecha”
(right). She had a blast dancing and we enjoyed watching her. Justo also used this
opportunity to deliver an affirmative life message where he promoted unity and
communication between students and their families. He encouraged the audience
not to give up when facing problems and to continue struggling to achieve their
goals. After the hour and a half concert our Hammond students were eager to get
their pictures taken with Justo, get his autograph, as well as purchase “camisetas”
(t-shirts), and CDs. Our students had a great time and were fortunate to have had
the opportunity to see Justo Lamas perform.
Junior Janet Akinduro was recognized by the Maryland
Foreign Language Association at their annual conference
for her winning entry in the Maryland Visual Arts
Contest. Janet is a student in Mrs. McCabe's Spanish III
Honors class, and was one of three Maryland secondary
students honored. Her winning entry can be viewed at
the MFLA website, www.mflamd.org.
On October 16, Mrs. Rahde, HHS German Teacher and
35 of her German students attended the annual
German-American Day at McDaniel College.
Students participated in a program that included workshops and
a German lunch including Wurst, Sauerkraut and
Schwarzwaelderkirschtorte. In all 25 schools participated
totaling over 900 students. Some of the workshop choices were: The Making and
Breaking of the Berlin Wall, “Mad” King Ludwig Castles, How I Survived the
Holocaust, Careers and Internship Opportunities that Use a Knowledge of German,
Germany Today and Siegmund Freud and Psychoanalysis. The students received
a T-shirt stating Ich spreche Deutsch, und du? (I speak German, and you?) which
was designed by a high school student as part of a contest prior to this event. Our
students were well-behaved and look forward to returning next year!
