On Tuesday, November 6, many students from Hammond participated in the
Poetry Alive competition at Mt. Hebron High School.
The competition is sponsored
by the Office of World Language and ESOL. World language students from around the county recited or wrote original poems in their respective language and level
and presented them in front of a very distinguished panel of judges. 68 Hammond students participated from Hammond, representing our Spanish, Italian, and
French classes. Students competed first amongst their classmates and did an
excellent job. Then, one student from each category was selected as the school
winner to represent Hammond at the competition. They were:

For Recitation:
    •Sope Lanlokun* -  Italian 2 -  Aria di Neve
    •Samuel Plazak* - Italian 3 -  Girotondo Intorno al Mondo
    •Conor Fitzpatrick* - Advanced Italian -  Se Piangi, Se Ridi
    •Hilda Abrah-Wiafe* - Italian Native -  La Rosa Nera
    •Laura Aondio - Italian Native  - Tornero
    •Elizabeth Rodriguez - Spanish AP -  Tienes Que
    •Natalia Giraldo - Spanish Native -  Para que tu me oigas
    •Jayda Simmons- French 2 -  Je suis comme je suis
    •Annie Jeon - Spanish 3  - Primavera

For Original Written Poems:
    •Elizabeth Cerwonka* - Italian 2- Le Luci della Citta
    •Samuel Plazak* - Italian 3 - I Tuoi Occhi
    •Zachary Shiflett* - Advanced Italian - Ti Vedo
    •Tom George* - Advanced Spanish - Espana
    •Natalia Giraldo - Spanish Native - Tu Mi Pasado, Mi Siempre Presente,
       y Mi Eterno  Futuro

In the end, Hammond dominated the competition, bringing home eight county trophies, taking home the crown in all Italian categories, and the Advanced level Spanish. The World Language department is "muy orgulloso" (very proud) of its students, and hopes for continued successes in the future.
