Influenza (HHS)

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released new guidance to help schools
promote a safer environment for their students and staff and reduce exposure
to influenza during the 2009-10 school year. The new guidance is designed
to decrease the spread of regular seasonal flu and the new H1N1 flu while
limiting the disruption of day-to-day activities and the vital learning that goes
on in schools.

In situations involving health issues, the Howard County Health Department
serves as the lead agency. Howard County schools are following the guidance provided by health officials and taking the following steps:
•School staff will continue to encourage prevention measures that have been
communicated to students over the past several years:
•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
•Wash your hands often with soap and water. If water is not near, use an
        alcohol-based hand cleaner.
•Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
•Most importantly, if you are sick, stay home.
•Get a flu vaccination each year.

Students with influenza-like symptoms
(fever 100 degrees or higher, cough or
sore throat) will be sent home and must remain home until they are fever free
without medication for 24 hours.

In addition to monitoring student attendance, schools are being asked by health
officials to collect more information from parents about specific symptoms when
absences are reported. This information will be tracked and reported to the health
department. Parents are asked to contact the school on the first day their child is
absent with flu-like symptoms.

Health assistants and nurses will be wearing facemasks when evaluating students/staff with influenza-like illness. The CDC and the Health Department do
not recommend that well students wear masks, however schools will not prohibit
students from wearing masks.

The school system is working with the Howard County Health Department to
prepare for the administration of the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
The flu mist that is being administered in elementary schools in September
vaccinates against the seasonal flu only.

Staff will continue to follow CDC and Health Department guidelines for
cleaning with the use of standard cleaning products and disinfectants. Health officials indicate the frequency of cleaning, within reason, is more important that
the product used.

Attendance Policies regarding late arrivals, early dismissals, and absences
A doctor's note is preferred and strongly encouraged when your child has an early
morning appointment
causing him/her to come late to school. It saves a phone call
to you to verify that your child did in fact have an appointment.
Absences for any reason require a note within 2 days upon returning to school,
otherwise their attendance remains Truant. Notes coming in after 2 days may be
disregarded.
All notes from home must include the following:
•Legal name of student, not a nickname
•Date of note as well as date(s) of absence(s)
     •Reason for absence
•Signature of parent as well as daytime phone number
All advanced absences require a Pre-arranged Absence Form. Any parent or
student may pick up a form from the front office.

Check Payments Policy (HHS)
When providing a check as a payment, you not only authorize the school system
to process the payment, but you also authorize us to collect a fee of $ 35 from your
account IF your payment is returned unpaid. A $35 fee is allowed by Maryland
State Law and is charged as an electronic fund transfer.
Please be aware that a
check payment authorizes us to use information from your check to make a one-
time electronic fund transfer from your account OR to process your payment as
a check transaction
. To help us to process your payment, please include the
following information on your check: full name, street address, and phone
number.

Electronic Devices (HHS)
Students are not permitted to use or display non-educational electronic devices
(i.e.: IPods, MP3 Players, headphones, CD Players, cell phones…) from the time
they enter the building until the ringing of the bell at 2:10 pm.

SchoolMessenger
(HHS)
Automated phone messages informing parents that their children were either
late to school or absent from school will be placed
through use of new software
technology called “SchoolMessenger”. SchoolMessenger will call your home
between the hours of 6:00pm and 9:00pm Monday through Friday.

The message will inform you that “your child was absent or tardy from one or
more classes”
after which, the parent will be directed to provide the attendance
clerk, Ms. Robin Smallwood, a written note within 48 hours to excuse the absence
or tardiness. Please understand that the system calls ONLY when students were
absent for the entire day or were late arriving to school.

The SchoolMessenger system will call the student's home phone number
that is
entered into Hammond High's system files. Many parents at other high schools,
however, have had much more success retrieving this message when it was sent to
a number other than the home phone. If you would like SchoolMessenger to
contact you via an alternate number (i.e.: your cell phone), please contact Ms. Smallwood at 410-313-7615 or email Tammye_Blossom@hcpss.org.
Barring technological malfunctions, Hammond HS will make use of this technology every
school day. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Blossom at
the email address above.

Use of Flash Photography/Audio Visual Equipment at HS Performances (HCPSS)
Due to copyright laws and in order to ensure the safety of the performers and for
the enjoyment of audience members, the use of flash photography is strictly prohibited. The use of audio/video equipment is also strictly prohibited.
Violation of this requirement could result in the performance being stopped
or the violator being asked to leave.
