Dance Companies perform at Disney World
Remembering Bob Gross Show
taught ballet, jazz, modern, ethnic and tap. All dance students have the
opportunity to perform in two dance concerts a year. Placement in Junior Company
and Company are by audition.
In between snowfalls, the Hammond Junior Company and
Dance Company made it to Disney. On Wednesday Feb. 10, both groups performed two shows at the Downtown Disney stage.
They had two fantastic performances. On Thursday, the dancers had a three-hour Disney Dancin' Workshop with Disney dance instructors. In addition to dancing, they experienced two live performances: Cirque Du Soleil's 'La Nouba' and a Poynesian Luau Show.
Remembering Bob Gross Show
The Dance Department participated in a celebration of the life of Bob Gross.The performances presented on December 17 in Hammond's auditorium were
filled with the things Mr. Grossloved: singing, dancing, laughing and cherished
memories. Mr. Gross, a Hammond special education teacher, was an ardent supporter of the dance and drama departments and spent many hours
contributing to the success of their productions and the lives of their performers,
crew, and directors. This summer he fell victim to the brain cancer that was a part
of his life for over five years.
Performances included “A Brighter Day” by the Junior Dance Company,
“Mamela” by the Dance Company, and theatre students singing “Circle of Life,”
“For Good,” and “Seasons of Love,” which included a lyrical dance by two of
Hammond’s Dance Company alumni.
Over $6,000 was raised for the Robert H. Gross Memorial Scholarship Fund,
which will be given to students in Dance, Theatre, and Special Education who
demonstrate compassion, creativity, and commitment in their time at Hammond
High School.
The months of January and February were chock full of performance dates for
the Department:
•Junior Dance Company and Dance Company performed at the Howard
County Dance Festival on Saturday, January 30 at 7 pm at Long Reach High School.
•The Hammond Dance Department presented its Winter Concerts on
Thursday, February 4 and Thursday, February 18 at 7 pm in Hammond's
auditorium. The show included performances by the classes and
Companies.
Dance Company members Megan
Giroux, Caitlin Rose and Abby Slavinsky were each awarded the Maryland All-
State Award at the Maryland High
School Dance Festival held on January 8, 2010.
