Hammond Students and Staff Pause To Watch History - January 20, 2009
x

On a morning that had an educational
focus on mid-term testing, the focus
shifted at midday to national events:
the inauguration ceremony of the
44th President of the United States,
Barack Obama.
At approximately
11:30am, the hallways were eerily
quiet as students watched the
proceedings live on TV from their
classrooms.

"It was so cool to know that everyone in class was witnessing history being
made. It was awesome,"
said one student after the ceremony ended and classroom
instruction resumed.

Reflecting back on the day's events, one Hammond teacher said: "I got chills every
time they panned from the podium to
the Monument, and you could see all
the people. It was wonderful."

Classroom instruction resumed after
President Obama was sworn in.
Soon
thereafter, the school day ended with
students and staff leaving the
building in a festive mood, no
doubt moved by the day's historical
events.
