  SCIENCE
              DEPARTMENT

Mr. Ken Zachmann
, ITL

Biography

Mr. Ken Zachmann attended the University of Maryland where he earned a BS Degree in Chemistry and a Masters Degree in Biochemistry.

His career includes coaching
Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys Lacrosse, WAGS Soccer and one proud year as the class sponsor
of the class of 96. Mr. Zachmann
also works during the summer
with kids employed by the Columbia Association.

He has been the ITL for Science since 1979 and I have loved every year of service to his department and the Hammond community.
Mr. Zachmann's greatest accomplishment in life has been
the growth and development of
his children into fine young
adults. His goal as a teacher is to help other parents experience the same enjoyment that he has had. His children benefited from excellent teachers and coaches
so it is his goal to provide the
same benefits to all the students
in the Science department.

Science Department Faculty

Science Department Overview

The science courses are designed to provide an effective student-centered approach to learning that engages students physically and mentally in an inquiry-based
laboratory program. The major goal is to develop substantive science literacy in all students.

The courses provide students
with opportunities to expand, enhance,
and modify the ways in which they view
the world. Such course variety provides
an environment that promotes student thinking, honesty, curiosity, and
questioning. Students are encouraged to
express and share ideas, solve problems,
and make decisions based on evidence.

ESOL Overview & Faculty

World Languages Overview
The study of world languages uses a
proficiency-based approach, which
focuses on what students can do with
the language and to what degree they
are able to function in the language.
World language study enhances the
integration of communication skills
with higher order thinking skills and
creativity.

The study of culture is an integral part
of the curriculum; it sets the stage for
language use and heightens students’
sensitivity to and appreciation for
diverse groups of people, environments,
and customs.

Students also develop broader knowledge
of and facility in their native languages
and tend to increase their verbal
performance. The study of world
languages contributes to positive self
-esteem, builds on individual strengths,
and accommodates a variety of learning
styles.
